Happy World Kindness Day! Founded by World Kindness Movement, World Kindness Day is a reminder of the power that compassion holds when put into action. At The Harlequins Foundation we’re excited to be spreading the love today through acts of kindness, and we’d love to encourage you to do the same. Even the smallest selfless thing you do for someone else can make a big difference to their day. They may even do something kind for someone else in turn.
Why should we be kind to others? Kindness ripples. When you are kind to someone else they’re more likely to do the same for someone else in return, so you’ll be making the world a better place with just one small action. In South West London alone there are nearly 1,000,000 residents – just imagine what could happen if every one of us did something kind for someone else.
Kindness makes other people happy – but it makes us happy, too. There are few things that compare to the feeling that you get when you’ve just made a positive difference to someone’s day, and changing things for the better is what we’re all about at The Harlequins Foundation. We would love to see Quins fans leading the way in doing something kind today.
Stuck for ideas? Here’s some we came up with earlier.
- Strike up a conversation with someone
Humans are social creatures, and a short friendly conversation with a friend, colleague or even a stranger can really improve their day. Try talking to a someone you wouldn’t normally, ask them about their day, and make sure they leave the conversation smiling. You could even take the opportunity to compliment them or tell a joke.
Smiling is contagious. It’s the most simple act of kindness you could do, and it’s both easy and free. Smiling at someone improves their mood, whether you know them well or not at all. Smile at a stranger today and see how it brightens their face. Best of all, your brains releases endorphins when you smile – so it will make you happier too.
- Be kind to yourself
All too often we forget to treat ourselves with the same kindness that we feel other people deserve. Take up a new hobby, quit a bad habit, or even start practicing mindfulness. The happier you are, the happier you’ll make the people around you – kindness comes from inside.
Whether it’s at your local charity shop, a food bank or one of our programmes, charities and vulnerable people need volunteers. The best part of volunteering is that you can really see the difference you’re making, and it’s a great way to get out and do something fun at the same time.
If you’re strapped for time and volunteering isn’t an option, know that you can make a massive impact on your community just by donating to The Harlequins Foundation. As little as £5 can change a young person’s life, providing learning material for them to build the essential skills they need to succeed.
