Lockdown Learning: Spring Term in Review

We have taken a look back on what has been a busy few months for The Harlequins Foundation’s coaching team, who, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, were able to continue providing invaluable support to local schoolchildren when they most needed it.

STEM Education: Primary

As part of our plans to extend our support for schools beyond the playground, we recently launched ‘Harlequins EDU’, an online hub providing Harlequins-inspired teaching resources to bring STEM education to life through the world of professional sport.

The first phase of content includes over 25 downloadable lessons and covers subjects such as; Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Maths, History, Geography and PSHE. Each subject comes with an easy-to-use unit guide, as well as carefully designed and differentiated resources ready to use in the classroom.

All lessons have been carefully designed and developed in partnership with local primary teaching experts, and are all linked to the national curriculum. You can find out more & access Harlequins EDU HERE.

Health & Wellbeing: Primary

Our wellbeing coach, Hollie, with the support of Premiership Rugby and the Greggs Foundation, has provided a virtual ‘Tackling Health’ programme which pupils & parents have been able to download at home, for free!

All 6 sessions are carefully aligned to the national primary curriculum and take inspiration from the mighty Harlequins men’s & women’s players. Pupils will get to explore the importance of healthy, balanced diets as well as the importance of active lifestyles, all at their own pace. Plus, each session is followed by an exciting home-workout with our very own personal trainer, Hollie Smith.

You can access our virtual Tackling Health programme from our website, HERE.

Rugby Development: Secondary

Following the news of the latest lockdown, and its impact on participation levels in grassroots sports, our team of dedicated Development Officers set to work on creating an engaging remote coaching syllabus. The team were able to support local schools, and over 550 pupils, to stay engaged with remote learning, whilst gaining a unique understanding of a new sport.

Our team worked to provide workshops and practical sessions focussing on the game’s core values; Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline, and Sportsmanship. Plus, they provided a broad range of online workouts, skills challenges and competitions as part of our #ClubTogether campaign, where famous Harlequins faces joined us to support young people through lockdown with helpful hints, tips and advice on staying active at home.
